If you are plugged into any sort of electronic media it’s impossible to escape what’s going on in the news. From natural disasters to economic woes and various warring factions, no aspect of our culture or world has gone unaffected. People are fearful not knowing what the future holds.

Much was the same in Malachi’s day. It was about 450 B.C. and the nation of Israel was in a dismal state. Their sin and rebellion against God led to years of Persian captivity and siege. Jerusalem was in utter chaos. With its walls torn down and its gates burned, it was every man for himself.

Unemployment and economic conditions were so bad that fathers sold children to their richer neighbors just so they could survive. On top of this, exorbitant taxes had to be paid to support the occupying army. And, because Temple revenues were down, the Levites had to move into the countryside and begin farming so they could eat.

All the while Israel’s neighbors taunted and ridiculed them. Mockeries and shouts of insult filled the air. A half-century of depression and despair had a tangible effect on the people. The Temple was abandoned and tithes were withheld while lame animals were being offered on the Lord’s alter.

“Enough!”, God said. “I wish someone would shut the Temple doors so these worthless sacrifices could be stopped. Return to me now, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “You are under a curse because you have cheated me of the offerings due me. Now bring all the tithes into my storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, I will open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing to great for you to take in. Go ahead and try it. Let me prove it to you!

"Because empty hands open Heaven’s windows.”
