Prothonotary warblers are one of my two favorite bird species to photograph (not counting owls!) The reasons are varied and I’ll share a few along with information about this “golden wonder” I call Proton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this one of two faves?<\/strong>
– Most importantly, it’s their striking plumage. I’ve seen the color yellow in many natural and artificial settings and I can’t think of any situation where it matches Proton. Contrast that with the black beak, eyes, and dark gray wings, and there you have a perfect combination.
– They are in Missouri only during breeding season, so my time is limited to glass them.
– They are not the easiest bird to photograph as they are constantly on the move, and they live in marshy, wetland areas which can be a challenge to get to.
– Difficult\/low lighting in these areas also plays an important role.
– Their singing and movement provides a constant cat and mouse type of game between us.
– All of the above just makes it fun!<\/em>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical Appearance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Vibrant Plumage<\/strong>: Adult males feature a striking, bright orange-yellow head and breast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Contrast Elements<\/strong>: They have solid blue-gray wings and tails, entirely lacking wing bars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Distinct Eyes<\/strong>: Their dark, beady black eyes stand out intensely against their solid yellow faces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sizing<\/strong>: They are relatively large and heavy-bodied for warblers, measuring about 5.5 inches in length.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Gender Differences<\/strong>: Females share a similar color pattern but look noticeably duller with a greenish wash on their heads. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Habitat and Diet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Swamp Dwellers<\/strong>: They breed exclusively in flooded bottomland hardwood forests, wooded swamps, and areas near slow-moving water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Insectivores<\/strong>: They feed heavily on spiders, beetles, flies, snails, and aquatic insect larvae.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Foraging Style<\/strong>: They forage low in the understory, hopping along logs and sometimes climbing tree trunks to pick at bark. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Unique Nesting Habits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • Cavity Nesters<\/strong>: They are the only eastern warbler that nests inside tree cavities instead of open branches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Secondary Users<\/strong>: They cannot dig their own holes, so they rely on old woodpecker cavities or artificial nest boxes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Water Barriers<\/strong>: They prioritize tree cavities standing directly over or very close to water to deter predators like raccoons and snakes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Moss Architecture<\/strong>: Males place moss inside several potential holes, but the female selects the final site to construct the nest cup. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Migration and Behavior<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • Long Journeys<\/strong>: They are migratory birds, spending summers breeding in the U.S. and traveling across the Gulf of Mexico for the winter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Wintering Grounds<\/strong>: They spend the colder months in the mangrove forests and tropical dry forests of Central and northern South America.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Loud Song<\/strong>: Males sing a high-pitched, ringing series of single syllables described as a loud “sweet-sweet-sweet-sweet”<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Territorial Flips<\/strong>: They fiercely defend their breeding territories through chasing and bill snapping, yet they winter peacefully in communal groups. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Origin of the Name<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          • Papal Clerks<\/strong>: The unusual name “Prothonotary” refers to papal clerks in the Roman Catholic Church. These official scribes traditionally wore bright yellow robes that closely match the golden hood of this warbler. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Conservation Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
              \n
            • Declining Numbers<\/strong>: The species is of high conservation concern due to a 40% population drop over the last 50 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Habitat Vulnerability<\/strong>: They face severe threats from the logging of bottomland forests in the U.S. and the rapid clearing of coastal mangroves in South America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
