Yesterday we took off and headed down to Hawn State Park to find some color in the trees. This is a prime spot with mixed hardwoods and Pickle Creek running through the park. But, it’s been so dry in Eastern Missouri I didn’t know what we’d find. The temps were great with an overcast sky – which made for nice lighting. But by that time we were out of the creek and up on the ridge and most of the oaks were turning brown. There were some spots of color, but nothing like years past. Below are a few from the creek with one from the parking lot – perhaps the one shot with the most color! Go figure. Anyway, we always have a great time when we trip down to Hawn.

On our way out we decided to drive by Hickory Canyons CA. Not having been there before we wanted to check it out. The trail was overblown with leaves and was hard to spot at times. We made it about 1\/3rd of the way in on the right side of the loop but, from what we could tell, there was only a steep passage down to the bottom. I love my wife more than trailing, so we turned back and walked the left side of the loop. Same thing. Being a little leg weary from the morning hike we decided to hike it back to the car and have dinner in St. Genevieve. (Pssst. Audubon’s has great burgers and chicken sandwiches!) I guess in our younger days we would have ventured down into the canyon without reservation. I guess those days have passed. I’d love to see the canyon after a fall rain. We’ll see…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
