Contrast is a wonderful thing – especially in photography. And, when we discuss contrast it’s usually in the context of tonal values, or the difference between lights and darks. But, let’s consider a more broad definition.
The first image below fits the classic definition. The overall image consists of very light warm pastel tones with the female indigo bunting providing the darker contrast. I rally like how this image plays out.

Next look at the two male indigo bunting images. What’s the contrast between these two? Although the first image conveys nice detail of the bunting, I believe the second image provides better contrast. Contrast in the size of the bird versus the the blade of grass he is sitting on. So, in this case the contrast relates to size of subject.

The last image is a prothonotary warbler searching out bugs for a morning meal. Here I see the contrast of a tiny colorful bird hunting insects among a dull, lifeless tree surrounded by nothing but stale swamp water.

So, the next time you think about contrast, think about more than just light and dark. Put your contrast into context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
