What a nice surprise
It was a wonderful surprise yesterday afternoon when this Cooper’s hawk showed up in our backyard. Some people may be unaware, but raptors like this Cooper’s hawk hunt birds as well as small ground prey. I’ve actually seen hawks take birds right out of the sky. (I have pictures of a red tail hawk eating one in our backyard, but I’ll spare you the images.
Sitting in our redwood tree, which is above the woods and creek below, he appears to be on the lookout for something. Moments after he flew away the birds returned to our feeders. If you want to see more birds around your yard, consider feeding them year round. We put out black oiler sunflower seeds, multi grain seed – which doesn’t require cracking, and suet.
